Rising to the 52 Films by Women Challenge

There’s a film challenge going on this year to see 52 movies directed by women. That’s a lot of movies in the first place for what I think of as normal people, but I’m already over 200 for the year. Curious about whether I’ve met the 52 by women challenge already, I decided to take an inventory. Here then are the movies directed by women that I’ve seen this year.

  • Eleanor’s Catch (1916)
  • Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare (1991)
  • Girl Asleep (2015)
  • A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2014)
  • Hypocrites (1915)
  • The Hitch-Hiker (1953)
  • Honeymoon (2014)
  • In My Skin (2002)
  • Kiss of the Damned (2012)
  • Love & Anarchy (1973)
  • The Love Witch (2016)
  • Near Dark (1987)
  • Old Joy (2006)
  • Pathogen (2006)
  • Punisher: War Zone (2008)
  • Variety (1983)
  • Wonder Woman (2017)
  • XX (2017)

And co-directed by women.

  • Messiah of Evil (1973)
  • Salomé (1922)

That’s 20 out of more than 200. Less than 10% of what I’ve seen this year, and I’ve been actively trying to seek these out. It’s pitiful and speaks to why the challenge exists. If the other half of the year is similar, I’ll have seen 400 movies and not succeed in the challenge. This is pitiful.

I’m going to redouble my efforts to seek out films made by women. It’s ridiculous that this is actually difficult for a film addict to achieve.
